‘Israel is the only safe haven for minorities in the Middle East’

October 4, 2017

DENIAL OF JUSTICE: “Christians and Jews live in Israel because Christ was originally Jewish. Does the world acknowledge Israel for protecting its Christians? Many in the international community have chosen to criticise Israel. This is in my mind, a double crime; because by doing so, the international community helps those striving to annihilate the Jews, the Christians, the Druze and Yazidis, for political ends.” – Father Gabriel Naddaf speaking to the United Nations Human Rights Council on behalf of United Nations Watch. THREE years have passed since this speech was made to the United Nations but the content, the message and its importance remains the same.

Father Gabriel Naddaf was speaking for United Nations Watch in September 2014 on the plight of the Orthodox and Catholic Christian communities in Iraq, Egypt, Palestine, Israel, the Copts of Egypt and others in the Middle East, and their plight was tied in with those of the Kurds, Yazidis and Druze and although Daesh may have been pushed out of much of its territory this year, the scars are still very real and the memories very fresh.

‘Middle East is soaked in Christian blood’

The Orthodox priest, who lives in Israel, claimed that since the beginning of the 21st Century, that Christians originally comprised 20 per cent of the population in the Middle East, and now it has crashed to four per cent.

He said Judaism and Christianity had a right to exist there as it was the birth place of both religions but right now every year across the world up to 100,000 Christians have been killed on an annual basis for the crime of believing in Jesus Christ and that the Middle East was particularly soaked in blood.

‘Rights of Middle East Christians denied’

“Christians in the Middle East are marginalized, their rights are denied, their property stolen, their honour violated and their men killed and their children displaced. Where will they go? Who will defend them?

“If we look at the Middle East, there is only one safe place where Christians are not persecuted – one place where they are protected enjoying freedom of worship and expression, living in peace and not subjected to killing and genocide. It is Israel, the country I live in.”

The priest accused the United Nations of being indifferent to their plight and condemning Israel, which was one of the only countries to help as they understood more than most due to some of their citizens surviving the Holocaust.

‘Holy Land is centre of Judeo-Christian heritage’

He said: “Christians and Jews live in Israel because Christ was originally Jewish. Does the world acknowledge Israel for protecting its Christians?

“Many in the international community have chosen to criticise Israel. This is in my mind, a double crime; because by doing so, the international community helps those striving to annihilate the Jews, the Christians, the Druze and Yazidis, for political ends.”

“By doing so, the international community unfortunately contributes to exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. It is time for the world to awaken and realize the truth of those striving to destroy the Jewish state, they are hastening the death sentence of Christians in the Holy Land and the Middle East, the land which witnessed the birth and life of our Lord Jesus Christ. If they leave, who will remain?

‘We’ll only be read in history books’

“O world leaders and supporters of peace, stop those who want to destroy the only free Jewish state in the region. It is the only refuge welcoming and protecting all of its citizens. It is the only place that does not attempt to push out Christians, forcing them to leave their land in search of security. I implore you from the bottom of my heart to hear the cry of the Christians in the Middle East before it’s too late and people will only read about us only in history books.”

What a comment on the Middle East that Israel is the only safe place for Christians and minority religions. Thank you for highlighting this, Matt.
